Three solos

Vera Mantero

Sala 1. GAIÁS CENTRE MUSEUM

In this edition, we present for the first time in Galicia the work of the Portuguese choreographer Vera Mantero, with three solos that are already part of the history of dance: Olympia (17 ‘), Uma misteriosa coisa disse e.e. cummings (20 ‘), and Talvez ela pudesse dançar primeiro e pensar depois (20’)

Olympia by Vera Mantero is a unique paraphrase of Manet’s painting. A five-minute palimpsest of the Impressionist Olympia blended with extracts from the book L’Asphyxiante Culture by Jean Dubuffet.

Uma misteriosa coisa disse e.e. Cummings is a tribute to the tropical mermaid of Parisian cabarets of the 1920s, Joséphine Baker. A black dancer, singer and actress from a poor American family, and a pioneer of contemporary dance.

Tal vez ela pudesse dançar primeiro e pensar depois is a solo premiering in 1991, created for the Europalia Festival in Belgium. Mantero wrote in the room leaflet at the time: “My relationship with dance revolves around the following questions: what does dance mean? What can I say with dance? What is it that I am saying when I am dancing?” This piece has always been an improvised piece. Vera Mantero, the author of mythical pieces of contemporary dance, such as Poesia e selvageria and these three solos we are presenting; is a teacher, cultural agitator, and also a film actress and singer. An implacable artist, the dimension of her figure in current dance and in Portuguese culture does not fit in a hand program.

AT THE END OF THE PIECE, AN OPEN CONVERSATION BETWEEN VERA MANTERO, ESTHER FERRER AND IDOIA ZABALETA
