The piece invites a collective invocation in which the performer becomes red earth, recognises himself and delights in the infinity of his hamstrings.
Amplified by Marina Tomás Amado’s sound journey, the work immerses the spectator in the contemplative to question his or her gaze in the face of the objectification of the black and mixed-race body, and the urgency of calibrating past and present.
This new work by Reinaldo Ribeiro is the part two of a trilogy that questions the representation of the black body in the arts in general, and can be understood as a way of questioning what it means to be a subject. bell hooks defines it well by pointing out that subjects are those who have the right to define their own realities, to establish their identities and to name their histories, in contrast to being an object, where reality and identity are defined by others.
