Fortunately there is always another day. And other dreams. And other laughs. And other people. And other things.
Clarice Lispector
The performing arts are in continuous movement and transformation, a state of affairs as ephemeral and complex as the arts themselves.
Festivals, which usually take place once a year, must take this into account, leading to unique and daring offerings which reveal mutation, change, experimentation, and the controversies of the world onstage.
Escenas do cambio now reaches its ninth edition without losing sight of what this type of festival needs. The overall idea of entertainment becomes a less general, more personal idea as it reaches an audience which is also changing, which demands other formats and other languages. Reality has surpassed fiction and it is important that we are invited to see and hear it.
The guest artists live in a shared reality, a narrative of today’s world which informs their pieces with a constant uniqueness in search of the concrete.
The debut of Kirenia Danza in collaboration with the Centro Coreográfico Galego closes their Afectos trilogy, while the company Matarile likewise concludes its trilogy of fragility in partnership with Teatro Español and the Centro Dramático Galego.
And also from Galicia, five slam poets will take us on a new route; Yolanda Castaño, Silvia Penas, Nuria Vil, Xiana Arias and Nieves Neira will create a poetic journey in tune with the chosen spaces.
Matías Daporta, back in his natal land, presents a unique piece on the casting of three actresses for Washington, the film that Lars Von Trier never made.
From Andalucía, Alberto Cortés brings us into the private universes of One night at the golden bar.
And from Catalonia, Las Huecas, a young company which tackles a sensitive subject with Aquellas que no deben morir.
From the Canary Islands, the playwright and composer Roberto García de Mesa has created Poco (o alguien dirá que nos equivocamos) for the festival.
From Andalusia and the Basque Country, the artist Nazario Díaz presents Háblame, cuerpo, a solo work looking for sounds in his own body.
And from Portugal, although he was born in Brazil, and in partnership with the Instituto Camões, we have the presence of Gustavo Ciríaco, a creator who will take the public for a walk to meet the public in Aquí mientras caminamos.
We close this edition with a concert by Maite Dono and Baldo Martínez (SONS-NÚS/CatroNubes) who have created their latest musical piece for Escenas do cambio with the presence of the video artist Anto Lloveras.
And we will find a moment to chat, to think, to talk about art, needs, and uncertainties.
We hope that once again this edition can fill the gap which always appears when we leave a show at Escenas do cambio.
Lola Correa. Artistic Director for the Escenas do cambio 2023 festival
